New Teacher Blog Tuesday

Today kicks off my new feature New Teacher Blog Tuesday!  Thanks for stopping by.  Today's featured teacher is Cherie from The{mis}adventures of First Grade

Cherie is a teacher from Arizona, who is sure to keep you laughing.  She's got great ideas and her hands full with 2 little boys!  Read on to discover some interesting facts about Cherie!

      1.  Blog button

2.  Why did you start blogging?

I originally started a blog for my personal/family life just for the fun of it.  Blogging is therapeutic!  Then, as I became more and more obsessed with Pinterest, I noticed that most of the pins about school ideas were from blogs.  And as we all know, blogs are like Pringles.  Once you pop, you can’t stop!  So I quickly began spending entirely too much time on the computer finding awesome blogs that have ideas on organizing my classroom.  If you knew me in real life, you’d know that organization is NOT my thing.  Actually, I think I have a post about that.  I loved all the great ideas, and wanted to become one of the cool kids on the block, so I started a blog!  Now I just have to keep it interesting! :D

3.  Tell us a little about your teaching background.

I currently teach first grade.  I graduated from Uof A(rizona) in 2004, and since I student taught in the fall (the best time to do it!), I had a semester where I didn’t have a teaching position.  I moved to Ann Arbor and substituted there.  I ended up getting a full time job as a math interventionist at a charter school on the outskirts of Detroit.  Then, after a year of that, we moved back to Tucson, and I have been at the school I am at now for going on 7 years.  The first year was kindergarten, the rest was first.  I love first!

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

Let’s see…  That could include a ton!  I would have to say the song for 2011 is “Oops I did it again” because I found out I was pregnant… and had a 5 month old.  Oiy vey.  For my life in general…
Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle (cliché I know… but I’m such a daddy’s girl!  This song makes me cry EVERY time I hear it!)
1999 by Prince – It was our Senior year theme song ! ;)
A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion – for my boys
Smile By Uncle Kraker – This song is Nathan’s song ;)
Stereo Hearts by Gym Class Heroes – Bryce’s song
Wide Awake by Katy Perry
And pretty much anything by Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, or Rob Thomas J  They “get” me
Just to name a few !

5.  What’s the hardest thing you've ever done?

There have been quite a few hard things.  But leaving the hospital without my son when he was born was probably the hardest.  He was almost 2 months premature, so I didn’t even get to touch him before he was whisked away to NICU.  Leaving him there when I was discharged was so intense.  I felt like I was leaving a part of myself.  Then every time I visited, I would have to do it again.  The good thing was that his nurses were fantastic, and I knew he was being taken care of.

6.  What’s your favorite TV show?

HOUSE!  I am absolutely obsessed with House.  And it’s over!  GAH!  I want to cry.  I love his temperament.  He’s such a jerk, and yet you love him.  Plus, he’s pretty good looking, in my opinion!

7.  Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?

I am a DJ Inkers kind of girl!  Why?  Because who wants to live all rigid and standard?  Not I said the fly!  DJ Inkers brings fun and excitement!

8.   Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?

I don’t think I had one! Is that bad that I can’t remember?  My birthday is on New Year’s Eve, and I don’t actually remember what I did… Not much probably since I had a 3 month old and a 16 month old.  But if I did, there were 31.  Call in the firemen!

9.  What was the last book you read?

Well, since I am boycotting Mr. Grey (for reasons that are funny, but not necessarily appropriate teehee), the last book I read was Mockingjay.  I really liked the whole trilogy, but the first (Hunger Games) was my favorite!

10.  What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Can I say all of them?  Haha  I really hate doing the laundry.  Not the loading part.  I actually like that. Makes me feel productive.  I hate putting the laundry away.  I will have piles on my bed for days.  Yep, I just sleep around them.  In fact, everything I’m wearing right now came off the bed this morning.  Another one that quite possibly passes putting away laundry is the litter box!  I just hate doing it!  And I definitely can’t bypass it and put it on the bed like the laundry.  Not a good idea.

Now that you know Cherie, hop on over to her blog and show her some love!
Next Tuesday I will feature Michelle Hudgeons from Smitten with First.

**I am having a sale at TpT through Wednesday (June 27th).

Monday Made It Linky & WANTED: New Bloggers

It is June 25th.  I’ve been out of school since May 25th.  I have pinned, researched, and tweaked ideas.  I have been to Michael’s, Target, and Wal-Mart. I had a wonderful pile of crafty items just begging for me to do something with them.  It was time to make some stuff!! So this weekend, with my 10 year old’s help, I made some stuff!!  We had paint, brushes, glue sticks, scrapbook paper, sparkly things, colorful clips, and gobs more everywhere! We had a great time. So here’s what we made…
I used these table baskets last year, but this year I wanted to jazz them up.  The baskets and cups are from the Dollar General.  The ribbon is from the $1 bin at Michael’s {You can get 2 baskets done out of 1 roll} and the pencil pail label is from Peace, Love, & Learning.  It is a free download-CLICK HERE-to go to her post.  The number is from a classroom theme set called Bright and Cheerful Bundle I bought from The Clutter Free Classroom.  If you haven’t seen what she’s created, you are missing out! CLICK HERE to see the cuteness.
I arrange my students’ desks in pods of 4 and place an empty desk on one end.  This is where the basket sits.  It holds much needed supplies-pencils, extra erasers & glue sticks, 4 small hand lenses, a 1 minute sand timer, monthly journals, etc.  Each person at the pod has a job.  We go over and over the responsibilities of each person.  It is person #2's  job to check the pencils each morning and sharpen the ones in the “sharpen please” cup.  Having the desks in pods, 1 extra desk at each pod, and the baskets worked really well for me last year.  They have all the supplies needed close by, and have a place to “turn in” papers-they stack them on the desk next to the basket.
A few weeks ago, I pinned that I wanted to make a frame for pictures on the 1st day of school. Here is the Pinterest pic I pinned:
My helpful little daughter painted my frame blue and together we attached the letters. I will temporarily put the year on the left side on the first day of school. This could not have been any easier.  Seriously.  After it was painted, I gave it a coat of Mod Podge for protection.  I was thinking about what to do with it since I hot glued the letters on- and taking them off could pull off the paint- so I decided that when I was finished snapping individuals, I will hang it on the wall with some sort of collage of the 1st day pics or a class pic.  Just to give it a purpose for the rest of the year. IMG_1899
My next idea was to turn my classroom clipboards from boring old brown to something cute and exciting.  This idea is all over Pinterest.  You can paint them, Mod Podge them, use scrapbooking supplies, ribbon, sparkles, and on and on.  I wanted mine to be cute, but still flat so they could actually use them {ribbon was out}.  I wanted them to be cute, but not take days & days so, when one is inevitably ruined, I won’t have a heart attack {lots of methods were ruled out}.  I decided that the best thing for me was going to be covering them with scrapbook paper.  The paper was 5 for $1 at Michael’s {another reason why I went this route}.  I didn’t know this, but a 12x12 piece of paper is the perfect height for a clipboard! I only had to trim one side and cut out a notch at the top.  I didn’t research ways to attach the paper- I just went at it!  I decided to spray the back of the paper, after it was trimmed, with Elmer’s Craft Bond {basically spray glue. SO COOL!}.  I them placed it on the clipboard.  I let my daughter cut out some clip art and design a few.  We glued down the clip art with Mod Podge then gave the entire board a few coats of it as well.
When she got bored moved on to better and bigger things, I

finished the rest.

I  have a few home projects that I am bursting with pride about that I’d like to show off, if I may…… This house has had almost everything in it stained, painted, and/or power washed since May! During teacher appreciation week, I jokingly blogged that I was treating myself by having the bathroom remodeled. Well, it wasn’t totally a joke, I was kind of serious….

Blogs & Pedis

Don't hate, but today I am blogging via IPhone from the pedicure chair. Ahhhhhh, it's fabulous. But rather than sit here and totally enjoy every second, I've been catching up on my blog stalking. I'm totally addicted.
I had to seize this moment to say thank you to my followers. I woke up this morning to 200 followers! I was shocked and amazed. I know a lot of you found my blog through a giveaway and following gives you an entry (I've found some great blogs myself that way). I am so glad you took the time to click "follow" and good luck in the drawing!! Seriously though, I am going to do my best to keep you coming back with amazing charm & wit! Ha!
I plan on my next few blog posts to be on spelling programs and organizing my various school notebooks- data, Dibels, behavior, etc.
You also may have noticed that my blog look a little different today... It is receiving a much needed make over by Jena Snowden from First Grade wit Miss Snowden. She is so talented! I'd like to link here here, but blogging on your phone prevents that :(
I am so glad I fell into the blogging world, I've gotten so many ideas and plans for next year! You guys are unbelievable!
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog today!

Anyways, I have several projects in the works, thanks to my fun trip to Micheal's!

100 Followers Giveaway!

100 Followers Giveaway
I began blogging in April of this year.  I had been on TpT for about 6 months prior and I noticed so many sellers had blogs.  So I started reading a few here and there.  I found some good ideas and then after awhile, I thought, “I think I could do this…”  I thought about it some more, doubting myself, of course, but after some encouragement from some friends, I decided to do it.   My first couple of posts were terrible.  They did not contain much of anything.  After spending hours and hours at my computer, I figured out how to do some things, like changing my background, creating a button, and editing images.  And here I am, 2 months later with just over 100 followers, some new cyber friends, and a ton of ideas from you guys!

To show my appreciation, I am having a giveaway with some fabulous prizes from some fabulous bloggers!  To share the love, instead of 1 person winning all 8 prizes, I will have 8 winners who each receive 1 prize.
