New Teaching Blog Tuesday

Today we will get to know Allie & Kate!

Feature Teacher: Allie Elliott aka The Gypsy Teacher

1. Name of blog.    The Gypsy Teacher

       2.                   Why did you start blogging?

It started out as my personal journey from the beginning of my teaching and traveling life. Then, after looking at all of the AH-mazing teacher blogs out there, I decided to make my journey more public :).

3.               Tell us a little about your teaching background.
Well, as I eluded to in #2, I am just beginning the journey! I graduated from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK in May, with my degree in Elementary Ed with a concentration in Teaching ELLs, and I’m excited to see what will come of it! I have taught in practicums ranging from urban schools to suburban schools, and all elementary grade levels. My hope is to teach around the globe, starting in my hometown, Omaha, NE, this year.

4.                    What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Oh gosh! This is a hard one! Well I have several:
                     Everlasting God- Fellowship Church
                     You Won’t Relent- Misty Edwards
                     Stuck Like Glue- Sugarland
                     Banana Pancakes- Jack Johnson
                     Rooftops- Jesus Culture
                     anything Mumford and Sons

5.                   What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
I have two really hard things:
For the training of my missions trip to Togo, West Africa, we went through a ropes course, which included: climbing 40ft poles with a harness on, climbing over wood wall with only others to help me over, walking a tightrope 40 ft in the air with one other person to help me balance, etc. It was CRAZY! But I grew so much!
I also had jaw surgery last summer. The oral surgeon had to break my upper jaw in 2 places and bottom jaw in 3, and do a bone graft to widen my jaw. It was PAINFUL! And I had to wear rubberbands on my mouth, only drinking liquids for a few months. PLUS I had to wear a LOVELY jaw bra--not fun!!

6.                   What’s your favorite TV show?
Anything Glee- especially this season’s Glee Project!!

7.                   Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
Most definitely a DJ Inkers girl! I love being creative and fun! Did I mention I DETEST Times New Roman?! :)

8.                   Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
21 candles on my last birthday cake. 22 is coming up in about a month!

9.                   What was the last book you read?
I’m reading the Hunger Games! I know, I’m late to the party. I finished reading The Giver a couple weeks ago, and I’m reading Daily 5 for the upper grades book study: We Read We Blog We Teach

10.                   What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
              Definitely sweeping and cleaning toilets!

Now I would like to introduce you to Kate!

1.                  Name of blog and link:   EduKate & Inspire

2.                 Why did you start blogging?

I have been an avid blog stalker for two years!  Starting my own blog always seemed very intimidating, but I decided to take the plunge during my first week of summer vacation this year.  I wanted a place where I could connect with other teachers and share my ideas.  I have been blogging for about a month now and am continuously amazed by the generosity and kindness of everyone in the blogging community!

3.                  Tell us a little about your teaching background.

I received my undergraduate degree in early childhood education in 2007.  I worked at a Montessori summer camp right out of college and decided to spend my first year teaching in a pre-primary (ages 3-6) Montessori classroom.  The Montessori experience gave me a great background in the importance of meeting individual needs.  Next, I taught one year in a first grade classroom and have now found my niche in second grade!  This year will be my fourth year teaching second grade!  I recently completed my master’s degree in community counseling and am a licensed professional counselor {I haven’t decided to get a second job just yet, though!}  This fall, I will be going back to school {again!} to pick up my school counseling license.  I would love to be employed as a school counselor someday... just have to decide if I am ready to leave the classroom!

4.                  What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

Oh wow, this is a hard one!  The best song to describe the overall picture of my life is 10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman.  I am constantly amazed by the blessings God gives me in my life.  As Matt Redman describes, “the reasons for the praise of God are so wide and wonderful that we could sing from now until forever and never run out of ideas as to why He is quite so worthy.”

5.                 What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity to be able to teach kindergarten in Ghana, Africa for three weeks.  To be able to go on the trip, I had to conquer my fears of the unknown, my phobia of needles {had to get a LOT of shots!}, and my strong dislike of being dirty!  I debated the trip for a LONG time and it didn’t seem real until I was seated in my little Delta seat on my way to Africa.  To say that the trip was amazing is an understatement and I cannot wait to go back again!

6.                 What’s your favorite TV show?

I have a few and they spread across a WIDE variety of genres!  My favorites are Glee, So You Think You Can Dance, Criminal Minds, The Big Bang Theory, Pregnant in Heels, Taboo, and my new favorite, American Colony {Ohmyword, has anyone seen that one?!   Love it!}  Thank goodness for DVR.

7.                  Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?

Does any teacher blogger say Times New Roman??  Now, I have to admit that I am not a big fan of super cutesy clipart and fonts {shhh!!}, so that eliminates some DJ Inkers... but... I do LOVE fonts and great fonts make me happy.  My favorite font right now is called “Throw My Hands up in the Air.”  Google it and check it out.  I think you will like it!

8.                 Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?

26... I’m slightly young!  I’m actually not a big fan of cake unless it’s funfetti cake with strawberry frosting!  Typically, my birthday staples are dirt cups with gummy worms and strawberry pretzel salad... yum!!!

9.                 What was the last book you read?

I am rereading No More I’m Done by Jennifer Jacobson right now.  I had the goal of starting writer’s workshop in my classroom last year, but it didn’t happen... I’m hoping this is the year!  It is a fantastic book if you haven’t read it!

10.            What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Doing the dishes... yuck!!!  My other least favorite task is getting gasoline—does that count as a chore?  I literally wait until the “no gasoline” light comes on every time until I decide that I finally should get gas.  It’s a pretty bad habit.
