New Teacher Blog Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday!  I have 3 new friends to introduce to you!

Our first teacher is Dani Patterson from Patterson’s Porch.
1. Name of blog and link: Patterson’s Porch -

2. Why did you start blogging?
I had a teacher friend who I suggested she should blog! Then, I saw the amount of FUN she was having and I wanted to jump on board!

3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I graduated Kansas State University and began teaching on Fort Riley! I taught first grade for two years on the fort. Teaching on a military base is WAY different than teaching in the civilian towns! Our classrooms are like a revolving door! My dad finally retired from the Army and moved to Texas. So I followed and got a job in Copperas Cove, Texas. Where I just completed 3 years here as a first grade teacher. It’s a town with a mixture of civilians and military families. My door isn’t as revolving but I have NEVER in 5 years of teaching ended a year with the same kids I started it with! I am also right now taking courses to get my Master Reading Teacher Certification. I was ESL Certified in Kansas but am dragging my feet at getting the Texas one!

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
“Unanswered Prayers” – Garth Brooks: Sometimes there is something that doesn’t go the way I “planned” on it going, but it always ends up as a blessing!
“That’s Beautiful to Me”- Jaron and the Long Road to Love: This was the song my husband and I danced to at our wedding. It sums me up perfectly! J
“Seasons of Love”- Rent: It was a song we sang for show choir in High School and I still love the message behind it

5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Probably what I am going through right now. My husband and I have been trying for a baby. We haven’t been having much luck and everyone keeps telling us to keep our heads up and be patient. Doctors won’t do anything until we’ve been trying for a year. I am trying to keep myself busy and keep my mind off of it. I know it’s not in my timing but in HIS! So, this is something that is not in my control and that is hard for me.

6. What’s your favorite TV show?
Big Bang Theory and Big Brother are tied up for me!

7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
Big time DJ INKERS! You ask why?? I ask WHY NOT? It’s WAY too cute to not like it!

8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
27! I am not looking forward to 30!

9. What was the last book you read?
For my MRTC Class: Reading Instruction that Works by Michael Pressley.
For personal: Lover Reborn: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R Ward

10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
DISHES! I would trade any chore in the house than to do the dishes! I even tried doing laundry every day of the week if my husband did the dishes. It worked for about a week. :/ Now we try to do them together to make it less painful for me! Haha!

Dani has some EXCITING news over on her blog, I suggest you go find out what it is!!

Our second new friend is Kelly from First Grade Fairytales

2. Why did you start blogging?
 July of this year!

3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
When I graduated college in December of 2000, there were simply no jobs in Alabama. After subbing until the summer, I decided I have to make a change if I wanted to follow my dream of teaching. I took a job right outside of Atlanta city in August of 2001, packed up & moved more than 2 hours from home. I knew nobody, and had never even spent the night by myself. haha. Talk about a leap of faith!! I taught there for five years ~ 1st grade for 4 years & K for 1 year. Wow! is the only word that describes my experience there. The school was in a challenging area, and so different from what I had known growing up or in my student teaching. I loved every minute of it & those kids truly had my heart. During my time there, I also finished my Masters in Reading, which was such an awesome program!
After 5 years, I decided to try & find a job closer to my house. At the time I was driving over an hour each way & had to leave for work at 5:50 AM! UGH! So, thankfully, I was offered a job at my amazing school to continue teaching first grade. I am in my 7th year and couldn’t be happier with my job, my school family, and honestly, my quick commute!! I just finished my Specialist last year in Teacher Leadership and as much as I loved the program, I’m just thrilled to have a break for now! J

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Oh goodness… I LOVE music & really wish we did have a soundtrack to our lives. Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyday had some kind of background music to match the mood or situation?? I’ll try & keep it to five because I could go on forever!
My own soundtrack would include :
1) Anything Elvis – yep, I love him. My dad and he share a birthday so maybe that’s where my love started, but Elvis always makes me happy!
2) Change is Gonna Come – Sam Cooke. What a beautiful song & when things get hard, I know it will get better & change with time J
3) Two Step – Dave Matthews. ALWAYS puts me in a good mood… “Celebrate we will because life is short but sweet for certain . We're climbing two by two To be sure these days continue. These things we cannot change.”
4) Mama, I’m Allright – Miranda Lambert. Great song for making your own way in the world
5) Better Together – Jack Johnson. It’s my & my BF’s song & after 4.5 years long distance, I still know we’re better together J

5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Moving away from my family and friends has to be number one. Add to that some family illnesses & being too far away to just stay by their side day in & day out, it’s been rough sometimes. Worth it, but very hard!

6. What’s your favorite TV show?
Of all time? Friends! I still laugh out loud every single time I watch an episode. Also love Big Bang Theory, Dallas (so good!) & bad reality TV. If it’s like a train wreck, I can’t turn the channel !

7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
DJ Inkers for sure!! A coworker gave me 2 discs (yes, floppy discs, NOT CDs..haha) my first year teaching & it just started my love for all things cutesy. My theory is if I’m going to make something, why not make it cute?!

8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
35! Which doesn’t seem possible when it doesn’t seem that long ago that I was in 1st grade, much less teaching it for this long!

9. What was the last book you read?
Honestly??? I finished the Fifty Shades series this summer & admit to loving it! It’s not rocket science & I’m quite certain it didn’t make my brain smarter, but they were fun reads.

10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Cleaning the tub!!! I’m short & have very short arms (seriously, my coworkers and BF call me “T-Rex”) so cleaning the tub successfully is really hard….and exhausting!! I would clean 50 toilets if I didn’t have to scrub the tub again. Oh, and I can I add unloading the dishwasher?? I don’t mind washing dishes & loading the washer, but I dread the unloading like crazy! !

Our third new friend of the day is Traci B.

2. Why did you start blogging?
Pinterest is what got me interested in blogging. I’d get to reading one blog and next thing you know I’m linking from this blog to this blog. It looked like a lot of fun, very resourceful, and a place for me to collaborate with other teachers. I was a little leery about starting my own blog at first though, and still am, because I’m afraid that I may not be able to contribute as much as everyone else does. I don’t even know how to put a document or a picture on my page yet, but I am hoping to expand my technology skills while also becoming a better blogger.

3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I am going into my fifth year of teaching when school returns in August. I have always taught special education, but have a dual degree in elementary Ed as well. Special Ed is my preference….primary level. Prior to teaching, I was a special education aide for the same teacher for five years in a resource room. I also did my student teaching at this school and my children both attended this school. Once I finished my student teaching I could not get a job at this school and had to do my first two years teaching at a school that I was not happy at. After my second year, a special Ed position opened up at my old school. It was like going home! I just finished my second year teaching year teaching there and I am so happy. I love my school, my class, and all of the wonderful people I work with. I teach the SDC class (Severe Diversely Challenged). I have 8 students and two fabulous aides. In my class I have students with Autism, Downs, Hydrocephalus, and emotional behavioral disorders. I earned my B.A. from Prescott College in 2008, my M.Ed. in Special Ed from Grand Canyon University in 2010, and just completed my M.S. in Cognitive Behavioral Disorders last month. Yes….if you did the math….I have been going to school for eight consecutive years!! I have finally decided to take a break and it feeeeeels good! I am so excited to have some spare time now to do other things I enjoy……like blogging!

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
This is a neat question, but a difficult one. I never really thought about what the soundtrack of my life would be and I tend to listen and like songs for their beat and could never tell you the words to most songs I like. For instance, I just found out the other day that “Take a walk on the wild side” by Lou Reed is about a transvestite ….I had no idea! Go figure. I’ve been singing that song for years and never knew what I was actually singing about. LOL! See what I mean? So I am going to list songs that remind me of each era of my life.
Temptations, Drifters: I grew up to these songs. My dad, stepmom, and I used to dance and sing in the living room to these songs when I was just a kid. I always think of my childhood memories when I hear these songs.
Raindrops Keep Falling on my head by BJ Thomas: My dad whom is passed away now used to always sing this song to me as a little girl when it rained. Every time it rains I sing this song. My kids hate it! When it rains, they will say, “Oh no, moms gonna start singing that song again.”
Poison, Guns & Roses, Def Leopard: These songs represent my teenage years. When I hear songs from this era, I think of my fun teenage years and my old friends in N.C.
Today, I like a little bit of everything. Some of my faves are Beetles, Tom Petty, Eagles, & Alabama. My family loves to play Wii Rock Band and our favorites are Beetles & Green Day Rock Band (these, I know the words to). I think the song Alabama sings, “Down Home” is a good representation of my life and where I grew up. Although I live out west now, and love it, I still consider myself a country girl from “Down Home”.

5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
I think the hardest thing I have ever done is when I had to have my dog put to sleep. That was so hard! It’s been five years and I still miss my girl. Okay….I’m tearing up.

6. What’s your favorite TV show?
Rachael Ray. I also like American Idol and America’s Got Talent. I hardly ever watch T.V. If the kids and the hubby are gone, the first thing I do is flip on the music channel….usually to classic rock. I will watch my hubby’s shows with him like storage wars, pawn stars, American pickers, etc., and I can get into the shows…..but Rachael Ray, Idol, and AGT are the only three shows that I will actually plan my day around or record.

7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
Well, before I became a teacher I was just a Times New Roman kind of girl. I’ve always been a simple person……not too fancy on anything really. Now that I’m teaching, my creativity is coming out. Now I want to use cute little fonts and clipart and different sizes and colors. This is actually one of my favorite fonts (Bradley Hand ITC) that I’m using now. I choose it quite often. To be honest, I had never heard of DJ Inkers until this interview (Just went and checked it out…and I’m in love). Now that I’m becoming obsessed with blogging…….I am also becoming obsessed with all of the cutesy clip art and fonts everywhere. I’m loving learning about all of these resources from everyone…..my bookmarks are piling up fast. I am feeling guilty that I am taking so much from all of you and not contributing anything. I am hoping to continue to learn the tricks of the designing trade and soon be able to start contributing more on my blog for all of you.

8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
Well, I cannot tell a lie…..the number of candles on my last birthday cake was “0”. I don’t get candles anymore. Heck, I’m lucky to get a cake! I can’t even remember the last time I blew out birthday candles. It was a long time ago….let’s put it that way!

9. What was the last book you read?
Let Me Hear Your Voice by Catherine Maurice. This book is about a family’s battle and victory over Autism. It is an excellent read. If you work with Autistic children or any child with an intellectual disability, this is a must read! I am not an avid reader of novels, but instead prefer reading articles and browsing teaching resources. I like “Instructor” magazine.

10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
There’s actually hardly any chore that I don’t absolutely hate doing, but since the question is singular, I would have to say Mopping! I absolutely hate mopping! It is the one chore in my house that gets neglected quite often.
