New Teacher Blog Tuesday!

Welcome Tuesday!  What a great Tuesday it is!  I am on fall break this week, so I HOPE this week drags on forever like some school weeks do! :)
Today I would like to introduce you to Patti from
1.                  Name of blog and link: Tales From A 4th (And 5th)Grade Teacher

2.                 Why did you start blogging? I guess for something to do with all my free time, LOL! Seriously, I found so many other teacher blogs out there sharing great ideas and collaborating on lessons. I wanted in….BAD!!!

3.                  Tell us a little about your teaching background. Teaching is actually a second (really third) career for me. I have an MBA and worked in the software/dot-com industry until my son was born almost 12 years ago. I ran a successful cake design business as a stay at home mom after that…and when he entered preschool, I went back to school to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. I am entering my 6th year of teaching and LOVE IT!! Wish I had started sooner….

4.                  What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life? Probably “Unanswered Prayers” by Garth Brooks and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper

5.                 What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Gone back to school, with a 4 year old at home, and tried to run a home business all at the same time.

6.                 What’s your favorite TV show? Mad Men

7.                  Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?  Definitely DJ Inkers…because everything in life needs a little color and pizazz!!

8.                 Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake? Umm..too many…actually 47!!

9.                 What was the last book you read? House Rules by Jodi Picoult….finished it at 2am this morning!!

10.            What chore do you absolutely hate doing? Laundry..well actually the putting away part…since no one in my house does it!! I am okay with washing and folding…but hate lugging it all upstairs and putting it away!!

Next we have Sarah from

2.                 Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging so that I could remember my journey as a first grade teacher. I look at it as an online journal that I can share with other teachers. This is a great way to share ideas, insights, and anything that helps make us better teachers! It also is a great motivational tool! If I blog about how I want to do something, I feel the motivation to get it done so I can share with everyone!
3.                  Tell us a little about your teaching background.

I have always wanted to be a teacher (my poor cousins would always be my “students!”)! I went to school and student taught at a school near my college and was offered a job when I was finished! (I was in Cancun when they offered it to me on a graduation trip!) I have taught first grade there for the past three years and while I was teaching I started my masters in reading. I just finished my masters this past December. Well, the commute to my school was about 40 minutes each way (sometimes an hour in the afternoon!) and spending 2 hours a day in the car (not to mention the huge gas expense) was not idea anymore, so I applied and found a job at a Title 1 school that is 4 miles from my house! I am so excited to begin teaching first grade at an amazing school close to home! (Just think what I can buy on TpT or Teachers Notebook with all that gas money I’m going to save now!) I can’t wait to get in my classroom (which everything is in my office right now at home! Yikes!!) and get organized and ready for some new little nuggets!

4.                  What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

Well, I asked the boyfriend this question and he said (so seriously) “Getting’ Jiggy With It!” I would have to agree! I love to dance…around the house, with Rudy (my new puppy), at weddings, etc.

The song I thought of is a new Darius Rucker song that I first heard at his concert a few weeks ago! It’s called “Southern State of Mind.” No matter where I am, I always am in a southern state of mind! I can’t NOT say “yes, ma’am!” (You would have never thought I spent the first 10 years of my life in New York! Whenever I got to NY to visit family they crack up and think I have the thickest southern accent!

5.                 What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
The Mud Run! It was the most intense three-mile obstacle course I have ever done! I had mud in places I didn’t even know existed! I did it with three of my best friends on Sunday last spring and needless to say I think we all had to call in sick the next day because we were so sore!
6.                 What’s your favorite TV show?

All time favorite T.V. show if FRIENDS (not explanation necessary!)!  My favorite new show is Revenge! Oh and I LOVE Modern Family!

7.                  Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?

DJ Inkers! The only time I’ve used Times New Roman is in college when I had to use it for papers! Even my e-mail is in a different font!

8.                 Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
25! Quarter of a century!!! I celebrated with all of my best friends at the beach and had the best time!

9.                 What was the last book you read?
The Hunger Games (so great!)! I am almost finished with Guided Math and I just started Fifty Shades of Gray ….(I want to see what all the hype is about!))

10.            What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Laundry! In college I had enough of EVERYTHING to not do laundry until I could go home (which was only about once a month)! Our new house doesn’t have a dishwasher and I never realized how spoiled I was! Dishes are now my least favorite (thankfully Nick and I have it worked out that I cook, he cleans!)

And now I introduce you to Heidi from

2.                 Why did you start blogging?
I actually started blogging as a way to journal things happening in my life, but then I found Pinterest and found amazing things posted by bloggers on Pinterest and became inspired to start my own teaching blog. I was going to combine both my personal life information and my teaching blog, but then realized I would be better off keeping them separate so I now keep two different blogs. I have so many ideas spinning around in my brain and being able to share them and maybe even help someone else out makes it worthwhile to me. Not to mention all of the great bloggy friendships I have created J

3.                  Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I graduated in December with my Bachelors in Elementary Education. I did some subbing and made my home in 1st grade. My fingers are crossed to be back there next year. I am currently waiting to hear back from a few different schools in hopes that I will for sure have a job next year. I am still busy creating away though J Now that the hubby is back to work after being laid off for several months I plan to go for my Master’s in Reading and Literacy.

4.                  What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
1.     God’s Not Dead by the Newsboys: I can listen to this song over and over and never get sick of listening to it. God is certainly not dead and is surely alive in me and I am not afraid to show it J
2.     Are You Going to Kiss Me or Not by Thompson Square: I just love this song and this song played at my wedding J
3.     Let Them Be Little by Billy Dean    : This was one of my slideshow songs for my wedding. When I was little I remember saying, “That song is so going to be in my wedding.” This song reminds me of when I was little and now reminds me of my students. We should never hurry them to grow up. Let them enjoy their childhood and the things that should remain innocent for them. It seems as though everyone is so eager to grow up. Enjoy life and let children enjoy their childhood J
4.     Let’s Grow Old Together by Lanae Hale: This is mine and my husband’s song. I want to grow old with my hubby. I love every minute I spend with him and can’t wait for many many more J (Ok I am done being sappy.)
I know there are others, but I will leave you with those for now.

5.                 What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
The hardest thing I have ever done would be saying goodbye to my dad one last time before he was buried and then walking down the aisle at my wedding without him next to me. He passed away when I was 16 from a heart attack. He was only 43 years old so it was definitely not expected. My wedding day brought with it sadness because he wasn’t there, but I had a great stand in, my father-in-law who I have looked to as my father ever since I met my husband (a couple months after my dad died.) He will not be around to see his grandkids and that makes my heart sad, but I know that he would be proud of everything that has happened in my life and all I have become so that makes me happy J

6.                 What’s your favorite TV show?
CSI:NY….I have always wanted to be a Crime Scene Investigator. I love solving “puzzles” and always thought it would be cool to have a job like them. The only bad thing is that I cannot stand the sight of blood. I get instantly nauseous when I see any site of blood so I guess that job is out.

7.                 Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
I am definitely a DJ Inkers kind of girl now that I know there are other fonts outside of Times New Roman that exist. If it weren’t for blogging I would have never known this. Who wants ugly gross Times New Roman on everything? Sure not this gal.

8.                 Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
I don’t like cake, but if I did it would depend on when you post this. If it is before August 6 then I will have had 21 candles on my cake. If it is after August 6th when this posts I will have had 22 candles on my cake. I do celebrate my birthday with a different kind of dessert which will be Strawberry Pretzel Dessert this year …yummy!!!

9.                 What was the last book you read?
Unlocked by Karen Kingsbury.  I LOVE Karen Kingsbury books. She writes so realistically and makes you feel like you know the characters personally. This was a great book about a child with autism and the challenges he and those around him faced every day. It made me realize how often times we take for granted the things that we can and cannot do and makes me all the more aware of those who cannot do/communicated the things they want to like I can.

10.            What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
DISHES!!!!!! I despise doing dishes. Our dishwasher broke about a month after my husband and I were married (9 months ago) and with our plans to move (we are only renting) soon we never got a new one. We eat on Styrofoam plates as much as we can and use plastic silverware. I would rather spend a few extra bucks than have to wash all those extra dishes. I will seriously let them stack up a few days and then do them all at once because I absolutely hate doing them. I cannot wait to have a working dishwasher again.
