Do you ever have trouble teaching sight words?

Have you found that sight words and some children just don't mix??  Sight words are a pain because they make up most of our print and most cannot be sounded out!  I've been teaching sight words for 11 years now and just recently found something that actually works!  While surfing the web this summer I ran across I See, I Spell, I Learn. I See, I Spell, I Learn, is a small business created by Roma Chadha.  She is a dyslexia tutor and has worked with children with dyslexia and ADHD for 5 years now.  Roma saw a need in her children when it came to sight words and could not find a product on the market to meet that need.  So what did she do? She created a product to help them!  She found that her students learn sight words best with visual clues.  Roma now has 2 sets of picture sight word cards, covering over 50 common sight words and a spelling work book.  The cards are brilliant, the sight word has a picture in it and a sentence to go with it.  I have been using the cards for 3 months and my kids love them!

Each card has a sight word with an illustration in a letter and a sentence on the back.

Roma's determination to make her dream a reality blows me away.  She saw a need, got an idea, and turned it into a small business.  Isn't that the American dream?

Here are some Q&A's with Roma

1.  Did you create the designs and sentences?

I have created everything - not an artist but enough of one to create drawings of my ideas and then the designer put them on the computer... It's a pretty cool feeling to watch something in your head become a real card you can hold in your hand!

Yes all the sentences are mine too.  This has all stemmed from my work and seeing what my students need.

2.  What has been the most difficult part of making these picture cards a reality?

Printing has been challenging. Looked around for a printer - it was too expensive here in the Bay Area. Remember I'm a part time tutor and reading specialist and don't have bags of money lying around and never, never in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought of opening a business! In fact that's the one thing I thought I really didn't want to do!! But sitting up one night I just felt so badly that these cards needed to be created so I just started putting the drawings down.  Anyway, printer was found in a different town - and so I drive an hour to pick the cards up. What's really exciting for me is that I just handed over 65 drawings today, set 1 and set 2 of homophones! And goodness if these kids need pictures for sight words, you can't even imagine how they need them for homophones! These words are such a nightmare. "Bad enough to have to retain the spelling of a word, now you tell me that the word sounds identical but there's TWO spellings to it?? UGH!"

3.  How do you feel about the picture cards?

I believe very strongly in them- because they do work magic for children who struggle. Emerging readers have fun with them, but struggling readers actually get them and can finally use their strength of visualization to store these words in long term memory- which , if left to a weaker left brain, would just never happen!!! :)

Guys- I can't tell you how wonderful these cards are.  When I found them online, I emailed Roma and told her I would like to buy a set and feature them on my blog.  She was surprised and thankful for the opportunity to get the word out about them.  I completely endorse these cards, because they work.  I've seen it with my 1st graders.  Stop by her shop and check out her sets of cards and Spelling Book.
