12 in ‘12 Linky Party

I sat down at computer tonight to find some awesome activities to use when we go back to school January 3rd.  I have 2 days to fill with lessons that will get and keep my little firsties’ attention.  They will have been away for 2 weeks and have been entertained by the Wii, Playstation, XBox, computer, iPod, iPad, and the TV.    How do you compete with all that?!  So anyways, as I was saying, I sat down to find some awesome activities, but I did what I always do…I started blog surfing.  I got lost in blogs and then found this fun linky I wanted to join, so here I am (WITHOUT any awesome activities), but with 12 fun facts about my 2012!
photo

2012 began with a great party and some wonderful friends down in Georgia!  Looking forward to kicking off 2013 the same way!
12.  Favorite movie you watched:
Two movies stand out in my memory-
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- If you haven’t seen it, rent it!

The Hunger Games- If you haven’t seen it, read the book FIRST, then rent it!
11.  Favorite TV Series:
We DVR many shows in this house…who likes to watch commercials? Not us! My most very favorite show is Modern Family.  It seriously makes me LOL.  Not the fake LOL you type when someone texts you something that you have to laugh at to not hurt their feelings, but the real LOL.  Seriously.
If you are not familiar with the show, in one episode, Phil gives his oldest daughter a book of Phil’s-Osophy.  Here are some of them-
  • Always look people in the eye, even if they are blind. Just say “I´m looking you in the eye”.
  • You only get one chance at a first impression. I suggest Julia Child because it´s easy to do.
  • Dance until your feet hurt, sing until your lungs hurt, act until you´re William Hurt.
  • Take a lesson from parakeets: if you are feeling lonely just eat in front of a mirror.
  • Older black ladies make the best ice tea.
  • Success is one percent inspiration, ninety eight perspiration and two percent attention to detail.
  • Watch a sunrise at least once a day.
  • If you love something, set it free, unless it´s a tiger.
And my favorite….
  • When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. Life will be all “Whaaaat?”
I can’t forget The Walking Dead!  LOVE that show!  If you had told me I would get so excited over a show about zombies, pre-Walking Dead, I would have laughed in your face.  Now, I hang my head in shame.  Yes, I love watching those people try to survive the zombie apocalypse.  If you don’t watch the show- I know you are rolling your eyes…I was once like you- until the zombies got me.
10.  Favorite Restaurant
Ummmmmm, idk… Any place with good Alfredo sauce- Olive Garden has a good one.  And that salad.  And those breadsticks.  Forget about it.

9.  Favorite new thing you tried
Does blogging count?  I started my blog this year and it is definitely one of my favorite things to do!

8.  Favorite gift you received
Oh goodness.  How do I narrow this down to one??  I have received several pieces of jewelry this year that I am particularly fond of.  My iPhone 5 is definitely a favorite.  So far I sound very materialistic…certainly don’t mean to!

7.  Favorite thing you pinned
Well, I just scrolled through all 1,083 of my pins.  It cracked me up seeing the different kicks I was on- they were all grouped together- tattoo pictures, e-cards, school stuff, inspirational sayings, etc.  But bad news.  I couldn’t find one favorite.  I linked up with Learning 4 Keeps a few months back and posted some of my favorite funny pins {HERE}.  One of my favorite pin quotes is this one:
I lived my life for a long time being envious of people who did this.  Glad to say that I am making progress in becoming the person I really am!

6.  Favorite Blog Post
One of my readers’ most favorite was one titled, Monday Made It Linky & WANTED: New Bloggers.  It has the most page views of all time with 3300+ views and 47 comments.  You’re comparing my blog to yours right now, aren’t you?  It’s ok, I would to.  anytime someone posts numbers I think about how they compare to mine.  It’s our blogger-number obsessed nature. :)  I posted some of my summer creations for back to school and pictures of my master bath remodel.  Good times.  Check it out.  One of my favs was 8 Easy Technological Things to Change Your Life.  That was a fun post to write.  I highlighted 8 things I had recently discovered on line to use in the classroom.

5.  Favorite Accomplishment
Looking back, 2012 was a year of several accomplishments for me.  I started a blog.  People followed me.  I was shocked.  I have hit some personal goals with my TpT store.  No paper check yet, but I’ve hit some personal milestones.  I have made it to Level 4 Advanced Intermediate of the Whole Brain Teaching Certification.  I’ve learned lots of new tricks to creating TpT products and I made my own fonts on my iPad!!  I’m pleased with all that!

4.  Favorite Picture
I have many.  This is just one of them.

This is my youngest daughter, 2 years ago, at her school playground.  I’ll never forget the look of excitement on her face when it crawled on her finger.

3.  Favorite Memory
Oh jeez.  I have too many.  Ummm, any memory with one of my kids in it.  Or any memory that includes some of my dearest friends.  Too vague?  Sorry!

2.  Goal for 2013
I’m not one who really sets New Year goals.  I have in the past and they never pan out.  Exercise- meh.  Cook more- nah.  Be more organized- uhhh.  Eat better- no fun.  I can say that by the END of 2013, I want to be a school librarian.  So that’s my goal dream.  We’ll see…

1.  One Little Word

A Little Fonty Fun {3 free fonts!}

I've been playing around with a new app recently, iFontMaker.  It is for the iPad and so much fun!  I have 3 ready that I want to share with you.
Dana’s Handwriting was the first one I made.  It is simply my handwriting!  You can download it in my TpT store {HERE}.  All my fonts are free, because I hate paying for fonts and didn’t want to make you do it either.
My second font is called Dana Circles.  It is a skinnier version of my handwriting with little circles on the points.  this is my quick way to make anything I write quickly in the classroom a little more fancier.  It’s so cute when I see my girls duplicating it!
Here is a better look at it: AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIiJj 1234567890

Then, I took that font and replaced the circles with dots.  I call this one Dana Dots. I am typing in bold so it shows up a little better for you.
Here is a look at Dana Dots:
AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIiJj
123456789
My terms of use are very simple, use them for whatever you want, but give me some credit! :)
You can download all 3 fonts {HERE} in a zip file.  I hope you enjoy them.  If you create anything using them, drop me a line, I’d love to see them in action!

New Teacher Blog Tuesday

I’d like to start out this post by saying how very sorry I am to the families that lost loved ones last Friday in Connecticut.  To the police officers and first responders, doctors and nurses, and others who assisted in this tragedy, my prayers are with you as well.  It was a horrible thing and there are just no words…  As a mother and a teacher, I am just sick about it.  Thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

My first feature today is not one, but two bloggers.  Husband and wife, Justin and Katie are both bloggers and have answered questions together.  They are just adorable and totally deserved to be followed!

      Red: Justin

  Green: Katie

1. Name of blog and link:

Justin: Writing Pad Dad. http://WritingPadDad.blogspot.com

Katie: Teacher to the Core. http://www.teachertothecore.com

2. Why did you start blogging?

Justin: I’ve wanted to start a blog for a very long time. I’ve always enjoyed writing and, when I was a student, my teachers always told me “you should keep writing”!

Katie: I wanted to share what was happening in my classroom and the curriculum I develop to turn my first graders into readers!

3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.

Justin: This is my 15th year teaching. I teach 4th grade this year, but taught 3rd grade for the 11 years before that! I have also taught 5th and 6th grades.

Katie: I taught 6th grade my first year, and it about killed me. My first year was hard, like it is for everybody, but I had just turned 22 and acted like I was still in college. Oh my Lord, I was a nut at the time! I was also meeting and dating my future husband (That would be me! And, we met while teaching at the same school! It was fun being whispered about!), was President of my college sorority, very much involved in church, and teaching was a whole lot of newness to deal with on top of my very busy social schedule! (She was busy going on dates with me. And, Katie, that breaks the record for the longest sentence ever). The great news is that in all that I survived my first year and married the best guy! (Again, that would be me!). I taught 2nd grade for 7 years and have now happily landed in 1st grade where I have been for the last year.

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

Justin: Oh, boy. This question is right up Katie’s alley! For me, “Everywhere” by Michelle Branch and “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton because they were on the radio constantly while Katie and I were dating. Every time I hear those songs it takes me back. It was a happy time. I also like a lot of 80’s songs that I am sure no one remembers.

Katie:

“Oh Lead Me” by Delirious

Anything from Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album- thank you, Justin, for introducing me to some quality music! (I do have good taste, don’t I?)

“Everybody Say Don’t” sung by Barbra Streisand

“Full Attention” by Jeremy Riddle

I spend some quality time with Alanis Morrisette’s “Jagged Little Pill” CD. Nothing against the new “Zen ” Alanis, thanking India and whatnot, but I like angry Alanis better.

5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Justin: Getting through having my newborn son in the N.I.C.U. for 17 days. Hands down the hardest. I really know the meaning of the saying “I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy” after experiencing that.

Katie: Watching my newborn struggling to breathe in the N.I.C.U. It was horrible. That was the longest 17 days of my life. He is happy and healthy now (we are so blessed), but I am a changed woman having gone through that, and will always be a N.I.C.U. Mommy. I still pray for all the babies in all the N.I.C.U.s. I know it’s a blanket prayer for babies I don’t know, but God knows all their little names.

6. What’s your favorite TV show?

Justin: “Shark Tank” and pretty much anything on the Food Network.

Katie: That is a hard one. It’s not even on TV anymore, but I really liked “Diagnosis Murder”. Oh, you don’t know that show? That’s because I was the only one watching it. Dick Van Dyke solving murders was kind of fun when I was pregnant and confined to my bed for 3 months of complete bed rest. I love “Glee”, the Housewives (all of them) on Bravo, and “Giuliana & Bill” on Style. (You left off your most favorite show of all time, “Monk”. Groans. That was painful).

7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?

Justin: Wait… let me check. Nope, I’m not a girl…oh…sorry… completely lost my train of thought. What was the question again? Oh, yeah. My wife drives me crazy with DJ Inkers, so I’ll say Times New Roman.

Katie: DJ all the way! I am dying over the new clip art license. I am in heaven uploading my curriculum to TpT.

8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?

Justin: 39 and there are soon to be 40. Will someone please have a fire extinguisher handy?

Katie: 34

9. What was the last book you read?

Justin: The English Assassin by Daniel Silva. Great read.

Katie: What Remains by Carole Radziwill (Sad, but beautifully written)

10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Justin: Most recently? Putting up Christmas lights on our house. Next up? Taking Christmas lights down.

Katie: Laundry. Boo! Hiss!

Our next blogger is Allyssha from Teaching and Tapas.

1. Name of blog and link:

Teaching and Tapas: 2nd Grade in Spain

2. Why did you start blogging?

I “started” my blog four years ago but I REALLY STARTED in August 2012. I originally started it to keep track of what I do in my classroom so that I could easily remember it the following year. There is a part of me that is still thinking that but I think I have evolved. Now I realize it can be helpful to other educators. I love the idea that I can share my little tips and tricks and things that work for me with anybody else who is interested. I think it is an exciting time in our profession because of how technology can link our resources and wisdom.

3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.

I taught 1st grade and Kindergarten at an amazing private school in Portland, Oregon for five years. The school was TINY and I had many roles other than a classroom teacher but I loved every minute of it. But, I started itching to live abroad. So now I am teaching 2nd grade at the American School of Madrid. I have been here for three years. The last two years were in 1st grade so 2nd grade is kinda new for me. The school is incredible with awesome administration and excellent resources. My boss works us hard and I have learned an incredible amount at this school. We are big on Common Core, Writers Workshop, Reading Workshop, Interactive Read Aloud, standards-based grading, and UbD. I have learned a lot but I want to learn more! So I am currently working on my administrative license and Math Specialist certification

4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

When I idealize my life, I think about Let’s Get Out of this Country by Camera Obscura (“we’ll find a cathedral city...”) but I will reluctantly admit that in high school my classmates chose the song Manic Monday for me and it is a pretty accurate representation J

5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Getting on the plane and moving to Spain was a toughie. I had just met an amazing guy. I loved my house that I owned. I was leaving my friends and family behind. But I had made a commitment. That day in the airport was full of drama and gushing tears as I left that handsome guy behind...good thing he is now living with me three years later here in Madrid!

6. What’s your favorite TV show?

Can’t decide between Dexter, Mad Men, or Game of Thrones. I dedicate too much of my week making sure I don’t miss them J

7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?

I am an ifont maker kind of girl. I seriously have a font addiction. So much so that I am making my own fonts. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a font only to find out that it doesn’t include numbers, uppercase letters, or normal punctuation. Gah! Can’t stand that!

8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?

On my birthday last week there should have been 35 candles. But wait a minute...I didn’t have a cake! How did I let that pass? Cake is kinda my favorite thing. Whelp, I guess that is a good reason for a big dessert night this week J

9. What was the last book you read?

Ugg, probably a work related book. Before that, it was the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. I am not the world’s biggest fan of her writing, but I was definitely sucked in.

10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Cannot decide between folding laundry or doing dishes. Nope, definitely the laundry. I dread it with all my might. Even worse because here in Spain we don’t have a dryer so there is never a hurry to get it folded for the next load. Lately I have been using my clothesline more than my closet when I get dressed in the morning.

Like the font you see?  It’s mine!  It’s my first attempt at creating fonts.  Plan on seeing more!  Get it free from my TpT store.

New Teacher Blog Tuesday

For you that don’t know, every Tuesday I feature bloggers who are new, or newish, to the blogging world.  If this describes you, email me at dml8609@gmail.com and I will send you the form.
I encourage you to go check out these new bloggers and help them out in the blogging world.

Our first new friend is Jennifer from Live.Teach.Create
1.             Name of blog and link:  Live.Teach.Create

2.           Why did you start blogging? I started blogging way back in 2004 as a way to journal my days as a teacher and just the random things that I did. My blog has changed its location many times over the years as well as the topic at hand. It all comes back to being my blog and takes me where my life is going.

3.             Tell us a little about your teaching background. I began teaching in 2004 in 5th grade in a small town in Texas. I moved back to my home district the next year and stayed in 5th grade another year before moving down to 2nd grade for 3 years. After getting my master’s degree and meeting my husband I wanted a change and took time to apply for the doctoral program and moved to Austin, Texas. Of course in 2009 this was probably the worst time to do this as after 8 months of interviewing and living apart as newlyweds, I conceded and moved back to the Dallas area where I was quickly hired and have worked for since January 2010 as a Middle School Math Teacher. I absolutely love my work and have added in Special Education this year as well. I believe that I have been put in every job for a reason and will always have a reason to teach the students I am blessed with each year.

4.             What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life? Lots of Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, and Little Big Town

5.           What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? The hardest thing for me was to realize that my first marriage was not the right thing for me. It took 2 years to come to that conclusion and I am so happy that I did because I found the best man that completes me in each and every way. {Love you M!}

6.           What’s your favorite TV show? Just one? Bones or Criminal Minds

7.            Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why? I would have to be DJ Inkers kind of girl. I like variety!

8.           Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake? 31

9.            What was the last book you read? Umm, I’ve been in the middle of reading Circus fo the Damned by Laurell K. Hamilton for about 6 months now.

10.         What chore do you absolutely hate doing? Dishes!

Our second new friend is Kim from Teaching Beginning SpanishSounds.
1.             Name of blog and link:

I wanted to connect to other preschool bilingual teachers. I also started a company and wanted a way to talk about our creations.

3.             Tell us a little about your teaching background.

4.             What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Bleeding Love
Bad
Beat It
Mmm Bop
5.           What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
I ran 4 marathons in one year. Talk about tearing up your body!!

6.           What’s your favorite TV show?
I am addicted to Revenge. I am way too nice to do anything mean to anyone else so I like watching someone else do it.

7.            Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
I am totally a DJ girl. I even did some work for them using their graphics. That experience pointed me in the direction of starting my own business.

8.           Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
Can’t remember what those numbers were.

9.            What was the last book you read?
Elf on the Shelf to my 8 year old twins. They love this book and still believe that Elfy is real.

10.         What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

New Teacher Blog Tuesday

New Teacher Blog Graphic
Welcome to this week’s New Teacher Blog Tuesday!
First, let’s meet Lisa from Growing Firsties.
1. Name of blog and link:   Growing Firsties
2. Why did you start blogging?
I have been blog stalker and soooo ridiculously inspired to “up my game” by all the amazingness out there. Once I upped, it made me want to give back to selfless, dedicated educators in this amazing profession. If my freebies and thoughts and ramblings can help someone, I’m thrilled!
3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I have taught first grade for the last six years. I was hired almost 20 years ago (big bangs and all) to teach 6th grade, which I did for two years. I have my Masters in Reading and was a reading specialist, but my heart is truly in the classroom. I have also taught fourth grade and third grade. Each and every grade has its own lovable flair!
4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
I am a huge fan of U2…I remember going to the Pride concert back in the 80s and have been to several others over the years. U2 makes me happy. Currently, so do Jack Johnson, John Mayer, KT Tunstall, Sheryl Crow and the Dixie Chicks.
Also, kind of random…but the theme song for the Oprah show sends me back to eight years ago when I was one of 300ish ridiculously lucky teachers in her audience for her Favorite Things show for teachers! I STILL can’t believe that happened! I’ll tell the story on my blog at some point and include the picture of my friends and I with her after the show…she approached us in the streets (in her tinted SUV) after the show and we all screamed and got to hug her and pose in a pic.
5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Also, kind of random…but BK (before kids!) a few friends, my husband and I took a sea kayaking trip to the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. We had to paddle something crazy like 11 miles and ended up getting caught in a super scary storm. The Ella Fitzgerald went down during a Lake Superior storm and that was a big ship. We were in 16 foot sea kayaks and felt like we were popsicle sticks. The water temperature was in the low 50s. If any one of us flipped over death would have been the most likely outcome. We all made it, but it was absolutely terrifying. We literally kissed the ground when we landed.
6. What’s your favorite TV show?
Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Parenthood and Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show.
7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
DJ Inkers. We spend sooo much time in our classrooms, why not make it cute and pleasing to the eye??? Lately I’m absolutely loving Kimberly Geswein fonts…
8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
41.
9. What was the last book you read?
Professionally I am finishing up: Pathways to the Common Core by Calkins, Ehrenworth and Lehman
Personally: The Blue Bistro by Elin Hilderbrand
10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Menu Planning. Though, it DOES make the week soooo much easier for my family when we have a plan!!

Our next new friend is Jodi from Realistic Teacher.  BTW- she is currently having a great 100 follower giveaway!
1. Name of blog and link:  Realistic Teacher
2. Why did you start blogging?
I followed a ton of blogs and was always sharing ideas, but it was actually a co-workers idea that I start my own. One of the things I say when I hear about the politics and drama that goes along with teaching is “I’m not being a downer, but that is just not realistic” or “Realistically speaking, this is how it would work in my classroom…” I guess the name stuck. She suggested I start a blog called the Realistic Teacher.
3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I’ve been teaching for 6 years. Originally, I was a middle school teacher…it was really not my thing. I quickly decided that I needed to make a move and moved down to elementary. I taught the “older” kids for awhile, but was always passionate about the little ones in the building. My principal moved me to second – yayyy!! – and I have been here for two years!
4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
This is a great question! Most of these songs have something to do with my family – mom, dad, husband, sons, brother; and really not much to do with teaching…
Hey Jude – The Beatles
Only the Good Die Young – Billy Joel (a shout out to my dad)
Livin’ On A Prayer – Bon Jovi
Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffett
I Hope you Dance – Lee Ann Wormac
Beautiful Day – U2
5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Moving away from Michigan was the hardest decision and thing I’ve done. All of our family lives there and it is difficult to be so far away. It was really hard to move my boys somewhere new and tell them that they had to leave their “old friends” behind. Of course, they stay in touch and some of their (and my) best friends live in Michigan. But I wish that we could move them, or at least visit more often!
6. What’s your favorite TV show?
2 Broke Girls – absolutely. It is totally inappropriate, so I know that people will judge me, but it is hilarious!! It’s nice that Mr. Realistic and I can sit down, watch it, and laugh at the same things.
7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
I love DJ Inkers! Most of the fonts that I use come from www.kevinandamanda.com because they have great fonts as well. If I’m working on a computer where I don’t have access to a “designer” font (a school computer), then I go with Century Gothic.
8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
I would love to answer 29, but realistically 38…
9. What was the last book you read?
The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. It was an amazing book! Right now I’m waiting for my book club group to decide on our next book.
The last book I read to my students was Ramona the Brave. My kiddos (girls especially) love Junie B. Jones. I told them we had a Junie B. when I went to school but her name was Ramona Quimby. My kids loved it! They are all on Ramona kicks now and I’m sure they will have Ramona on their Christmas lists. I love when I can get kids reading something new!!
10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Seriously, folding laundry or emptying the dishwasher. I don’t mind doing the cleaning but I always assign the putting away tasks to Mr. Realistic or the boys.
Our last new friend of the day is Terry from Terry’s Teaching Tidbits
1. Name of blog and link: Terry’s Teaching Tidbits
2. Why did you start blogging? I started blogging to draw attention to my Teachers Pay Teachers store, and to start sharing what I’m doing in my classroom. It has motivated me to do some more fun activities with my kids so that I can begin to feature them on my site.
3. Tell us a little about your teaching background.
This is my 6th year teaching. I spent my first year teaching 3rd grade and then changed schools to be an Elementary Drama Specialist. I taught drama to all students in my new school in grades K-5 for two years. I grew up doing theatre, so this was such a great opportunity for me. With budget cuts, my position had to be cut, so I was moved back into the classroom. I started teaching 5th grade and am now in my third year of this.
4. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
“Life is a Highway,” “Summer Girl,” and “Midnight Train to Georgia”
5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
I went to Italy by myself the past two summers to take Italian classes. I didn’t know anybody and had never been to a foreign country, but I made amazing new friends and had an incredible experience.
6. What’s your favorite TV show?
Either Grey’s Anatomy or Dexter. I can’t choose.
7. Are you a Times New Roman or DJ Inkers kind of girl and why?
Times New Roman is boring to me these days. I’m not sure what DJ Inkers is, but any font that is new and cute is my favorite J
8. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
I didn’t have a birthday cake, but if I did, there would have been 28 (or 29 if I have one for good luck!)
9. What was the last book you read?
The last of the Hunger Games trilogy.
10. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Cleaning my floors. I avoid it at all costs.
