Field Trip Edition of Five for Friday

I am linking up with Doodles Bugs Teaching to share my Friday Five.  If you'd like to link up, or just see more Five for Fridays- click the image above.
Now, this Friday happened 2 Fridays ago.  It was our last day of school.  We (as in my 1st grade team) did something we'd never done before. We (I, really) scheduled a field trip for the last day!  I had to do a little convincing that this really was a good idea, all the while praying that it would be... Usually the last day is filled with packing up and cleaning, stacking chairs and "recycling".  We did all this on Thursday.  Had everything packed into backpacks when the bell rang that Thursday.  We told the kids to bring NOTHING but a sack lunch the following day.  Friday morning arrives.  We watch a little PBS while we waited on the bus, then about 8:30, we head to the park!
We have an awesome park with a wilderness station that offers classes for students on different types of animals, habitats, a nature hike-things like that.  Our kids attended a program on reptiles and amphibians where they were able to experience a box turtle and a small snake (yuck) up close.  Then, we learned about insects in the second program.  They were able to pass around jars with creatures and try to figure out which one WASN'T an insect.  Good times.
Then, it was time for lunch!  We had a picnic lunch at one of the many pavilions.  The weather was great.  A little on the cool side, so most of us ended up out from under the pavilion in the sunshine!  After lunch, we walked to a nearby playground and played for a few hours.
Many parents met us for lunch and visited while the kids played.  Too soon, it was time to go back to school!
This picture says it all!  It was a quiet ride back to school...

This was my last day in the classroom.  It was great! And even better, I didn't have to say goodbye to my kids, I just said, "see you next year!"  because I will have them all in the library!
Snowman? Yeah, I don't know.  It was late May!  Still made me tear up though.
Everything did that day.  I'm  a weirdo ;)
Next year, I will be the school librarian.  I am very excited about this new experience and you will be hearing a lot about it in the coming months.  I am working on totally transforming my library.
The place hasn't changed in 30 years.  There's a lot of changing that's going to happen by August!
Stay tuned!!

  1. Wow, a Librarian?! How fun! I can't wait to see the changes you make to your (dated-sounded) library!! I love that your field trip went well...our school does a "play day" on the last day, so it's nice to just be a facilitator and make sure no one gets hurt rather than actually trying to organize and "run" the day. Love the "after" bus pic...a picture is truly worth a thousand words!

    1. It is nice when the last day is organized by others! Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  2. I believe my class went to the same park while I was student teaching! So much fun. We went to an owl program as well. Have a great summer, I am sure you will be busy!

  4. I would never have dreamed of taking a field trip on the last day of school, but it sounds like you and the students had a great time. I bet you're excited about your new adventure as a librarian. It sounds like it's past time for a transformation. Can't wait to see pictures and read about the changes.

    1. At first I thought a field trip on the last day was crazy too, but the more I thought about it, I thought- why not?? I am definitely going to be sharing pre and post library makeover pics with you guys! Fingers crossed it turns out the way it already looks in my head!!

  5. I have the same picture of my kis coming back from our field trip! They play so hard. Enjoy the change to the library!

  6. Love the sleeping kids picture. You all looked like you had soooo much fun! Happy summer!
