New Teacher Blog Tuesday & Freebies

Each Tuesday, I feature two bloggers who are new to the blogisphere!  If you'd like to be featured, all you have to do is email me at dml8609@gmail.com!

Our next blogger is Meghan from
Teacher at the Wheel

1.          Name of blog and link:
Teacher at the Wheel (inspired by my favorite children’s book Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus)

2.        Tell us about your blog and why you started it.
I surf teacher blogs basically every time I work on lesson plans. Then I thought “Geez Amanda, you’re being awfully selfish aren’t you? Just take, take, take, and never giving anything back. Shame on you!” That’s right, my blogging conscience shamed me. Serious answer: I wanted to give back. I’m not the most creative teacher, but I hope that I can share ideas that will help someone just like so many teacher bloggers have helped me.

3.         Tell us a little about your teaching background.
Through a bizarre and unexpected twist (mainly low student enrollment), I ended up teaching kindergarten when I thought I was going to be teaching 3rd grade. God, however, always knows what He is doing and I ended up LOVING kindergarten. I taught it for 5 years until yet, again, I unexpectedly moved me up to 1st grade. I have taught firsties for the last two years and LOVE it as well. They are a little bit older and more independent, and I can do a lot more with them. My husband and I are moving this summer, so I just got a new job teaching 2nd grade. I just keep moving up!

4.         What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
“It’s my Life” by Bon Jovi—I love the line “I just want to live while I’m alive.” That’s a great life motto!
“Remind me who I am” by Jason Gray—a great contemporary Christian song that asks God to remind us constantly that He loves us more than blogs can describe!

5.        What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Wow. I realize in trying to answer this question how incredibly blessed I am! I have a good job, great family, good health…my life has been thankfully free of a lot of hardships. If I had to pick something, I suppose it’s hard for me to remain confident in who I am and not try to change to please others.

6.        What’s your favorite TV show?
Gilmore Girls!!!!! For sure my all time fave! I’m actually watching tivoed episodes right now! I also love How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Downton Abbey, and Castle.

7.        What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
I am ALWAYS cold, so my favorite item of clothing is my pair of slipper boots. They are soft and cozy and keep my feet warm on hardwood floors. Now if only I could get my pooch to stop trying to eat them…

8.        Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
28, but I’ll be adding another one in July.

9.        What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?
The last book I read was Below Stairs which inspired “Downton Abbey,” one of my favorite shows. A very interesting non-fiction story about life in the early 1900s. Next I would like to read Gone Girl…just waiting for someone to bring it back to the library!

10.       What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?
Um…that’s probably everything I eat! I am a junk food addict. I’m trying to be better, but I could eat chips, cookie dough, and pizza all day, and wash it down with a delicious Coke!

11.        Give us some links- Twitter, Pinterest, Teacher’s Pay Teachers, Facebook, a free teaching item etc.
I’m just starting to create things, so I don’t have a Teacher’s Pay Teachers store yet, but I do have several freebies on my blog.  Here’s a link to a simple long vowel sort (an easier and harder one): https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2BrwiivR_fjUHhEaFE3TWlKdU0/edit?usp=sharing

1.          Name of blog and link:  First Grade Hugs and High Fives

2.        Tell us about your blog and why you started it.  Like so many others, I’ve been reading blogs for years and always thought…”How do these people do it?  They must not have a life.”  Sorry, don’t take offense!!  Then I thought about it and decided to give it a try for myself.  At first, it was really just to teach myself something new.  I didn’t really think anyone would read what I had to say.  But then I got a few followers and a lot of encouragement.  That’s all it took.  I was hooked.  Now, it’s my way to connect with other like-minded teachers and get and share ideas.

3.         Tell us a little about your teaching background. I’ve been teaching in the same district where I student taught 13 years ago.   I’ve taught first grade for most of my career, but I did start out in third grade.  After a few years of teaching, I got my Masters Degree and became a certified reading specialist.

4.         What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Don’t You Worry, Child by Sweedish House Mafia- It reminds me that I shouldn’t worry, there’s a plan and I need to trust in myself.
Home by Phillip Philips-  It’s just a feel good song and I can’t help singing along
Can’t Hold Us- Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis- no particular reason… I just like it.
(I am such a tweenager when it comes to my tastes in music.  I can’t help it, LOL!)

5.        What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?  I can’t really say, I’ve faced too much hardship.  But I guess the hardest thing I ever did physically was train to run a 10K.  If you are an avid runner, a measly 6.2 miles is nothing.  But, if you are an out of shape, overweight mom of two like me, it’s no easy feat.  I was never so proud of myself than when I finished that race and didn’t walk an inch.  I’m not fast, but I don’t give up.  I’m thinking about taking the plunge and signing up for a half marathon, but I’m dreading the training.  We’ll see…

6.        What’s your favorite TV show?  Ooooh… I’m such a TV junkie.  Some of my favorites are The Bachelor (I know, I know, but I LOVE it), Scandal, Revenge, Glee, and The Big Bang Theory.

7.        What is your favorite item of clothing and why?  Yoga pants for obvious reasons… I love to be comfortable.  I wish they fit into our superintendent’s definition of professional attire.  Sadly, they do not L!

8.        Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake? 33

9.        What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?  The Discovery of Witches series were the last books I read.   I’m strongly considering rereading The Great Gatsby from my high school days.

10.       What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?  A piece of birthday cake left over from my oldest’s 6th birthday a few days ago.

11.        Give us some links- Twitter, Pinterest, Teacher’s Pay Teachers, Facebook, a free teaching item etc.
