1.     Name of blog and link:  My blog is named Mrs.Banister’s Kindergarten Kids

2.    Tell us about your blog and why you started it.
In the summer of 2011, I discovered a little website called Pinterest.   You may have heard of it. :)  My days and nights were consumed with pinning and finding new, exciting things to do with my sweet kindergarteners.  When heading to the original links, I stumbled upon some of the popular teaching bloggers, such as Fran Kramer, Deanna Jump, and Cara Carroll.  After exploring the MANY teacher blogs out there, I decided to start my own blog.  I have had my URL for a LONG time, but I just started consistently blogging in May.  I hope to inspire teachers just as other teacher bloggers have inspired me in my classroom.

3.     Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I started college in 2001 in elementary education.  While going to classes, I also substitute taught at a local elementary school.  I spent a lot of time in a kindergarten class as an assistant, and I knew I did not want to teach kindergarten! :)  I decided to change my major to secondary education (social studies) and transfer to another university.  In that time, I decided that elementary was for me.  I student taught in fifth and sixth grade, and just knew that intermediate grades were in my future.  In January 2006, I got a long term sub position in first grade and adored it.  The next school year, a kindergarten position became available in that same school, so I had to take it.  l fell in love and haven’t looked back!  I have had opportunities to take other positions in my almost 7 years of teaching, but just cannot leave kindergarten. :)

4.      What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
This is a fun question!  My husband and I made a soundtrack of music for our wedding favor... This reminds me of that!
*Good Things Happen by Dierks Bentley--This was on our wedding soundtrack and instantly makes me think of my hubby.  It’s a really sweet song.
*Hey Porter by Johnny Cash--Because my son is named Porter :)  We played this song in the car on the drive home from the hospital with him.
*In My Daughter’s Eyes by Martina McBride--It makes me think of the mother/daughter relationship.  I feel this way about my own girl. :)
*The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert--Makes me think of my childhood.
*How Great Is Our God by Chris Tomlin--Because my faith is the most important thing in my life.

5.     What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
I’m lucky to say that this is a hard question to answer for lack of difficult things I have done in life.  :)  I have to say the hardest thing for me was going back to work after having my children, especially my second one.  There are times I wish I could stay home with them 24/7, but I would miss teaching a whole big bunch.  There is always sobbing involved on the first day back to school after summer break, but I have to remind myself that when they start school (next year for my son, and a couple more years for my daughter), we will all be on the same schedule for the next thirteen years.  I think this is where teaching kindergarten is perfect for me, because I really get to be a second mother to 25+ kiddos all day. :)

6.    What’s your favorite TV show?
I love watching TV.  I tend to get into one TV show and just obsess over it.  Right now, Duck Dynasty makes me happy, happy, happy.  It’s TV I don’t have to think about or worry about my kids walking in and watching.  Plus, it’s just funny!  My husband and I have watched How I Met Your Mother from the beginning, so that’s also a special one for me.  I will admit, I cried when the audience got to see the mother in last season’s finale!

7.     What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
For casual days, any of my school t-shirts.  We are lucky enough to have casual Fridays, so you can bet money that I will be in one of my blinged out school shirts, American Eagle blue jeans, and tennis shoes. :)
For normal school days, I am one of those crazy teachers who wears heels every day.  My feet hate me for it, but I can’t let them go.  And yes, I taught in them all the way through both pregnancies. :)

8.    Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
29!  I will be adding another candle in August, but we will just say I am 29 and holding. :)

9.     What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?
I rarely get to read for pleasure, but I adore reading cookbooks.  I know it’s not really telling a story, but I love cooking, and I love finding new recipes.  I found The Pioneer Woman’s newest cookbook on sale at a used bookstore a couple of weeks ago.  I have spent A LOT of time reading the recipes and trying them out for my family.  The last book I read for pleasure was The Duck Commander book by the Robertson family.  Professionally, I have The Next Steps in Guided Reading on my shelf for this summer.

10.  What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?
I have been hard at work on planning professional development I will be presenting for my school district next month, so last night, after hours of creating Keynotes and Google Docs, I broke open a pack of Oreos.  I only ate 4, but that is NOT on my diet! :)

2.           Tell us about your blog and why you started it.
Blogs have helped me be a better teacher. Since entering the classroom two years ago, I have spent a lot of time reading, sharing, and drooling over the amazing ideas of other teachers across the world. I felt connected to them and wanted to be a part of the family. I started my blog at the beginning of June in hopes of reaching out to others the way that my fellow teacher bloggers reached out to me. They inspired me and reminded me that a blog can be one of the best forms of personal reflection.
It took me forever to decide on a name for my blog. I currently teach second grade, but that won’t be the case forever. I wanted a blog title that is unique, will be transferable no matter where my education path takes me, and also represents a part of my personal life. I finally chose the name A Rocky Top Teacher. I am from the East Tennessee (close to Knoxville) and have grown up being a University of Tennessee Vols fan. The song “Rocky Top” is a staple in this area, and I hoped it would make a nice addition to my blogger name.

3.             Tell us a little about your teaching background.
This fall will start my third year as a teacher. I have been in second grade since I started teaching and LOVE it. There is just something about that age that pulls at my heart every day.

4.             What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Make Someone Happy- Jimmy Durante
Survivor-Destiny’s Child
Feeling Good- Michael Buble

5.            What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
It is ironic to say teaching? In the two years that I have been in the classroom, I have grown up a lot. It is not just about me anymore. I have a classroom full of children AND families who need me. I am responsible for teaching them how to be successful individuals who will grow up to lead this world. Teaching is hardreally hard. But, it is worth every. single. minute.

6.            What’s your favorite TV show?
My favorite TV show is Pretty Little Liars. There is just something about all of the DRAMA and suspense that keeps me tuning in episode after episode. Plus, it is the Wednesday lunch topic at work so if you want in on the “cray-cray” then you have to watch!

7.            What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
My black Columbia jacket is my FAV item of clothing. It is warm and cozy and matches with dressy or casual wear.

Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
23

8.            What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?
The last book I read was The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. I have several professional development books that I am trying to read this summer. The next book on my list will NOT be a PD book. I am thinking maybe The Eye of Moloch by Glenn Beck.

9.            What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?
I may or may not have eaten a whole jar of cheese dip and a bag of tortilla chips on my own.
