New Teacher Blog Tuesday & Freebies

Welcome to New Teacher Blog Tuesday!  Each way I feature two new bloggers and they, in turn, share some freebies with you!  IF you would like to be featured, email me at dml8609@gmail.com

Our first new blogger is Sarah from

1.        Name of blog and link:
     KinderCakes

2.       Tell us about your blog and why you started it.
Kinder Cakes is a kindergarten blog I started during my first year of teaching kindergarten. I started blogging through the influence of my family- my mom and two sisters have blogs, too!  I wanted to start a teaching blog to share my creativity and adventures in kindergarten with others in the teaching world.

3.        Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I have been teaching kindergarten for one year. Prior having my own kindergarten classroom, I taught kindergarten for an extended maternity leave and student taught in second grade.  I love kindergarten and was thrilled to be offered the kindergarten position last summer!

4.        What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
With two little girls at home, the only songs I listen to are Disney songs right now. With that said, the songs on the current soundtrack for my life include:
·      A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes (Cinderella)- I am always setting personal goals and dreaming, so this song seems appropriate.
·      Touch the Sky (Brave)- I know this song was a contender for songs played at the start of one of the Disney marathons. I am training for the Chicago Marathon and when I hear this song, it makes me think of being at the starting line in Chicago, or even better… in Disney World!
·      Mother Knows Best (Tangled)- We have two daughters- 10 months and 3 1/2 . Sometimes I feel like Rapunzel’s mom and say “Mother knows best” when my girls get into something and I tell them not to.
·      Syncopated Clock (Leroy Anderson)- I would go crazy without a schedule. My home and school life have to be organized and I live by schedules!

5.       What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
The hardest thing I’m currently doing is taking care of my Chihuahua during his journey from heart disease to heart failure. He has good days and bad days. Fortunately we have a great vet who has helped me manage his many prescriptions. He has pulled through several very bad days, but I know he will never be out of heart failure.  I can just stay positive and enjoy the time I have left with my faithful furry friend.

6.      What’s your favorite TV show?
Our DVR is full of shows, but only a select few shows actually get my full attention. (Usually I’m only half watching while I’m working on materials for school, my TPT store, or my blog.) One show that always gets my full attention is Modern Family. My husband and I laugh throughout the entire half hour!  We are totally Claire and Phil!

7.      What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
Oh boy, this is a hard question! I have a lot of clothes and love them all! My favorite piece would have to be my pink pencil skirt from Banana Republic. I love the classic, sophisticated look of a pencil skirt, and I love anything pink. So put the two together and it’s the best skirt ever!  I almost always wear something pink to school!

8.      Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
I think my family put three sparkler candles on my cake, but they were twenty-five short!

9.       What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?
The last book I read was The Black Box by Michael Connelly, which is a part of the Harry Bosch series. I got hooked on the Harry Bosch series when I got my Kindle. I love the suspense and thrill of the detective series.  I’m a little embarrassed to say that I started Fifty Shades of Grey. I always jump on the book bandwagon late! (I read Harry Potter books when the last movie came out, I read the Twilight books after Twilight was in theaters, and I read Hunger Games the day before we saw the movie. I wasn’t kidding when I said I jump on the bandwagon late!)

10.      What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?
The last thing I ate that I really shouldn’t have was a third chocolate coconut macaroon. My three year old and I made a big batch of them today while my baby took a nap.  They turned out so good! I could have eaten many more but needed to save some for our family picnic tomorrow!

Our second blogger is Marcy from

1.        Name of blog and link: Searching for TeacherBalance

2.       Tell us about your blog and why you started it.
Searching for Teacher Balance is a blog containing: thoughts and ideas, activities, DIYs, everyday scenarios, all while searching for a balance.
I started my blog to not only help myself find equilibrium between my teaching life and my personal life, but to support others that are searching for the same “balance.”

3.        Tell us a little about your teaching background.
I am going into my 9th year of teaching.  My teaching career started in Michigan, as a 5th grade teacher.  I then moved to Southern California, where I also taught 5th grade, and met my husband.  The more recent leg of my career has taken place in Oregon, where I have taught kinder through 5th grade ESL, and am currently a 1st grade teacher.  I have loved each state and each experience, but my heart is definitely in 1st grade!

4.        What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Life is a Highway- Tom Cochrane
Never Say Never- Tristan Prettyman
Free Fallin’ – Tom Petty
Turn it Around – Lucius

5.       What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Buying our house is definitely one of the hardest things I have ever done.  It is amazing to look back at the amount of stress, anxiety, and happiness that went into getting our family in our first home.

6.      What’s your favorite TV show?
Friends – Hands down, I relate a ridiculous amount of events in my life to scenes from the show!

7.      What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
This is a hard one!  I would have to say it is a tie between my Alex and Ani bangles and my long gray wrap sweater (my hubs got it for me as a surprise).

8.      Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
30 – EEKKK!

9.       What was the last book you read? What are you going to read next?
Pathways to the Common Core; By: Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman (I highly recommend this book)
East to the Dawn: The Life of Amelia Earhart; By: Susan Butler

10.      What was the last thing that you ate that you really shouldn’t of?
Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Milk Chocolate Bar – They are a perfectly “balanced” chocolate treat.
