Well, first of all, today is our first full day with students. It's also my first time to be a school librarian. I've spent the past 12 years in the classroom teaching either PreK, 1st, or 2nd. My favorite of those was 2nd. There is something magical about 2nd graders. They are able to read and write and follow directions. You can do so many fun activities with them...I just loved my 5 years there. I don't dislike the other grades, each one has its own special set of positives and negatives, 2nd was just my fav!
So what grade am I this year? I am no grade, but also all grades.....I'm the librarian! I went back to get my Master's in Library Science 4 years ago. I finished in 2, then patiently waited for my librarian to retire. Now it's my turn! I teach in a small, rural, Title 1 school with prek-5th graders. I will have all classes once a week for 40 minutes and have 2 days a week for open checkout, extra scheduled visits, etc. I am so excited! But I am also so NERVOUS! It's a little like being a first year teacher, because the library is a whole new world. A new skill set is required. I have no idea how mch I can do in 40 minutes. I am used to my lessons going as long (within reason) or as short as I needed. I am used to the same faces all day long. I am used to only one grade level. Tomorrow, all of that will be different!
I have been blogging for a little over a year now. I was Fun in 1st Grade, but recently changed to Common to the Core so I could reach a wider audience. I will blog about the library, but also other things that can help all teachers. I am a Common Core Coach for the state of Tennessee and have extensive training in the ELA Common Core State Standards for 1st grade. I love to make teacher resources and classroom materials, which I post on TpT and Teacher's Notebook. I tweet and Facebook about teachery things, but also life things.
I hope you'll come back by tomorrow for a tour of my library!
