TNCore- A Great Common Core Resource

Core Coaches from Rutherford County School District
I am so proud to be part of the amazing work that is gone on in Tennessee for the past year!  I have served as an ELA Core Coach for 1st grade.  I have spent hours being trained on the ELA standards and best practices for each one.  Then, I spent many more hours training other first grade teachers around the state.  I have learned so much through this experience.  Every time I presented the information I learned a little more about how to teach and about myself as a teacher and presenter.

The state of Tennessee set a goal last year to become the fastest improving state in the nation.  I'm proud to say that we did it!  On the NAEP results for 2013, Tennessee showed the largest academic growth.  You can see the announcement by Governor Haslam {here}.

Tennessee has also put together an awesome website designed to help Tennessee teachers teach the Common Core State Standards.  Parts of this website are password protected because of copyright issues with some of the materials.  If you are a Tennessee teacher, you have full access to the site. Please email from your school email if you are a Tennessee educator in need of a password. If you are not a Tennessee teacher, you can still explore parts of the site, but not the password protected parts.  So, non-Tennessee peeps...I'm truly sorry about that...

Non-Tennessee teachers- you can access the list of sites that take you out of the TNCore site and to other websites that TNCore has deemed worthy.  These links can be found by clicking the Mathematics or ELA tab then go to External Resources.

Tennessee teachers- if you have not explored all TNCore has to offer, oh man, you are missing out! You can find information on the CCSS, PARRC, helpful resources for math and reading, all the materials from the summer trainings, and so much more!
Here are my favorite links under the Mathematics tab:
~Curricular Resources tab- instructional math tasks are available for each grade
~Training tab- the materials given out in the summer trainings are here
~External Resources tab- a list of websites that are very beneficial to math CCSS

Here are my favorite links under the ELA tab:
~Curricular Resources tab- ELA units & close reading tasks by grade bands {EXCELLENT!}
Summer training materials are also found under this tab.
~External Resources tab- links to other sites like Tim Shanahan's blog & the Common Core
Classroom Project

Being an ELA person, I can't say enough about the ELA resources.  The reading units are very explicit in teacher and student directions and span approximately 10 days for each one.  My 1st grade teachers recently taught the Insects Unit and the students loved it!  If you have not explored this site, I highly recommend you do!  Feel free to share this post with all your teacher friends!

Rotating Desk Stand for your Tablet

I recently received a Kantek Rotating Desktop Tablet Stand to review for Shoplet.  I've never used a tablet desk stand so I was excited to try it out with my iPad.

The stand is very sturdy and holds your tablet either direction you choose.  The base is strong and spins smoothly.

There are multiple positions for the tilt, so you can angel the iPad to whatever suits you.
It's hard to tell from the picture, but the area where the iPad sits is cushioned.  This cushion helps grip the iPad so it doesn't slide around.  The stand will turn a complete spin so if you are using it with a small group of children, everyone can easily see the screen.
The only thing that I personally didn't like was that I had to take it out of the case to fit in the stand.  My DoDo case did not sit down in the slot securely, but if you have a thinner case or no case, you would not have this problem.

Shoplet sell the Tablet stand for $19.99 and others sell for $100.
I would not hesitate to recommend this stand to anyone who needs one.  I like the size of the stand and how it is made.  The stand does not take up much space on my desk and holds the iPad very securely.

Shoplet is a great place to go for your office needs.  They also carry promotional products,   promotional shirts, and office stationary.
I received this product free from Shoplet in exchange for my honest review.

Teaching Leaders of our Government

Wrap up President's Day week with a lesson on our government leaders!  Last year, I searched high and low for an activity to teach my 1st graders who our mayor, governor, and president as and what the government does, but I just couldn't find anything I liked so.......... I made my own!
In this 8 page mini booklet, students write in the president, governor, and mayor’s names on the provided blanks. I left some space in case you want to paste a picture of your state and city leaders. On one page, students write facts about the government and on the back cover, students will color in their country on the world map and place a dot on the location of their state on the United States outline.
Here's the best part-
You can get this booklet free by paying with a Tweet!

Do you know this website? Holy moley, it has everything you could possibly want and need from a worksheet website.  In addition to worksheets on every topic you could think of, there is a flashcard generator, a BINGO game generator, custom worksheet generators, an electronic filing cabinet, quick links to view Common Core standards addressed by each activity, sticker charts, and so much more!
There are seriously worksheets on every subject area, from kindergarten to 5th grade level.  Of course, teachers of all grades can use the Teacher Tools section and all of the custom generators.
